About Project
Note: In respect of our client’s privacy, the homeowner’s name remains undisclosed.
Some features are built to be looked at, and some are built to be felt. For this private family compound in Kisumu, the client wanted a water feature that would make the home calm and welcoming by day and moody and atmospheric by night. Noble Parks and Pools designed the Riat Cascade to do both.
The cascade is a gently curved wall of black ridged stone, set into the boundary wall beside the driveway. A sweeping white capping crowns the wall, with ferns planted along the top so greenery spills over the feature. Water spills down the textured panel in thin, even sheets and collects in a basin below. Six submerged LED lights along the base wash the wall in colour, shifting from soft purple to warm amber and deep red.
Just beside it, Noble Parks and Pools also created a landscaped garden with a green lawn, edged beds and young palms. The cascade and the lawn were planned together, so guests have a place to sit, relax and take in the view.

- Give the family a peaceful, restful atmosphere at home.
- Create a memorable first impression at the driveway.
- Change character from day to night through colour and light.
- Be visible from a garden seating area where guests can relax.
- Use the corner of the compound well, without crowding the driveway.
- Stay attractive with simple upkeep.
Challenges & Solutions
A cascade with colour lighting involves much more than water running down a wall. The curved surface, the water flow, the electrical lighting and the surrounding garden all have to work together safely and look effortless. Every part was planned before construction began, so the finished feature feels like one design.
The setting added its own demands. The cascade sits next to a working driveway, and the garden had to be shaped from bare, freshly cleared ground. Our team needed to protect the feature from vehicle movement, manage water and electricity side by side, and create a garden that looks mature and welcoming.
Challenges:
Creating a mood-lit cascade beside a driveway, with a garden to match, meant solving design, safety and practical problems at once. Below are some of the challenges we faced.
A curved wall looks elegant, but it is harder to build than a flat one. The ridged panel had to follow the curve smoothly so water flows evenly from one end to the other.
Water must spill from every ridge in a steady, even film. If flow is uneven, dry patches and streaks appear, and the effect is lost.
Lights, cables and a pump sit right beside moving water. Everything had to be waterproof, properly protected and placed for safe operation and easy servicing.
Lighting that works after dark can look flat or harsh in daylight. The wall needed a finish that looks refined in both, with colour that enhances the texture rather than overpowering it.
Vehicles, gate movement and gravel dust all affect a feature at the edge of a driveway. It had to be protected, tidy and kept clear of splash and traffic.
The garden space started as open, disturbed soil. It needed grading, planting and edging to become a lush, usable space that works as a viewing area for the cascade.
Solutions:
Each challenge was met with careful setting-out, quality materials and thoughtful detailing, giving the client a cascade and garden that feel calm, finished and dependable.
We built the wall as a gentle concave curve and finished it in black, hand-textured ridged stone. The curve frames the water and gives the feature depth that a flat wall can’t match.
Each horizontal ridge acts as a small ledge that catches and releases water in a thin, even sheet. A recirculating pump feeds the top of the wall, so the water runs steadily and the pattern stays clean.
Six waterproof LED fittings sit in the basin at the foot of the wall, spaced evenly along the curve. Cabling is routed out of sight, with a protected junction point nearby for safe servicing.
The LEDs can shift between purple, red, amber and green tones, each bringing out the ridges and the falling water in a new way. A soft glow beneath the white capping adds a finishing line of light across the top.
Raised planters beside the cascade protect it from vehicle movement and soften the driveway corner. The wall is finished in the same grey tones as the compound, so it blends in cleanly.
We prepared the ground, laid a green lawn, edged the beds with stone borders and planted young palms and shrubs. The result is an open lawn where guests can sit and look across to the cascade, with gravel paths linking it to the house.
Outcome
The finished cascade has become the emotional centre of the property. By day, the black ridged wall, white capping and green ferns give the driveway corner a clean, modern look. By night, the wall comes alive, and the family can choose a mood that suits the evening, from cool purple to warm amber to deep red.
The soft sound of water and the changing light create a calm, restful atmosphere for the family. The garden beside it gives guests a natural place to sit, talk and enjoy the view, so the feature is part of daily life and entertaining rather than something only seen in passing.
A Feature That Works Day and Night
Because the cascade is lit, planted and landscaped together, it looks good in every light. The lawn, borders and young palms will grow in over time, making the setting richer each year.
Noble Parks and Pools has once again shown how water, light and landscaping can transform an ordinary corner of a compound into a place with real atmosphere. Careful planning and quality materials make it dependable as well as beautiful.
With its curved black cascade, colour-changing lights and a green garden made for sitting and looking, the Kisumu Riat Cascade is a calm and moody retreat, designed to be enjoyed by the family for many years.
