About Project
A gate is the first thing every buyer, resident and visitor sees. For Ocean View Ridge, the client wanted that first view to set the tone for the whole estate, with a sense of calm, nature and welcome. Noble Parks and Pools designed and built the Fountain of Happiness, a large rock waterfall wall set beside the entrance gate and gatehouse.
The structure is a long, low wall sculpted to look like a natural rock face. Layered ledges, overhangs and hollows give it depth, and warm rust, brown and ochre tones echo the red coastal soil. Planting pockets are built into the rock and hold ferns, trailing vines and broad-leaved plants, with spiky accent plants along the crown. Water spills from troughs along the top and falls in several curtains down the face into a basin below. The estate’s welcome sign sits on the rock itself, with spotlights at the base so the water and lettering are lit after dark. In front, a herringbone-paved driveway leads to the gate, and planted beds of palms, flowering shrubs and ground cover line the road.
What the Client Envisioned
A Landmark That Says “Welcome Home”
The client wanted an entrance that would:
- Create a strong first impression for buyers and visitors arriving at the estate.
- Carry the estate’s welcome message in a memorable, natural setting.
- Bring the sound and movement of water to the gate.
- Suit the coastal climate and the colours of the surrounding land.
- Include green, low-maintenance planting along the entrance road.
- Look good by day and at night, and stay dependable with little upkeep.
Challenges & Solutions
Big Structure, Coastal Conditions
A water feature at an estate gate is a public landmark. It has to be strong enough to stand for years, watertight enough to run all day, and attractive enough to match the estate’s image. Our team built it in stages on site, from the concrete wall and basin to the rock sculpting, planting and final testing.
The coastal setting added its own demands. The site is hot, dry and windy, the soil is sandy, and the sun is strong, all of which affect water loss, finishes and plant survival. The landscaping around the feature had to cope with the same conditions.
Challenges:
Building a large, natural-looking waterfall and landscape at a coastal estate entrance meant solving structural, water and planting problems at the same time. Below are some of the challenges we faced.
The rock wall is long and carries several water troughs, rock ledges and planting pockets. It needed a strong frame to stay stable and safe over the long term.
A big basin and wall that run daily can lose water through leaks, wind and evaporation, especially in a hot coastal climate.
A long wall can look flat and repetitive. It needed varied depth, colour and texture so it reads as natural stone from the road.
Water must leave each trough evenly and fall cleanly to the basin. Uneven flow causes dry patches and a messy look.
Plants in rock pockets and in sandy roadside beds need good drainage, water and the right species to thrive in strong sun.
The sign, the lights and the pump equipment had to be built in neatly, without spoiling the natural look or blocking servicing.
Solutions:
Each challenge was met with sound construction, skilled hand finishing and thoughtful planting, giving the client a landmark that looks natural and runs reliably.
We cast a strong concrete wall with steel starter bars left projecting from its face. These bars lock the rock layers firmly to the frame, so the sculpted finish is held securely in place.
The basin was shaped in concrete, lined with a heavy black waterproof membrane and covered with reinforcing mesh before the final surface was applied. This makes it watertight and durable.
Our artisans built up the wall in layers over wire mesh and carved ledges, hollows and overhangs by hand. Several tones of rust, brown and ochre were applied so the face looks like weathered natural rock.
Water is fed into troughs along the crown of the wall and released over their edges in several curtains of different widths. The result is a layered, soft-sounding fall that looks good from the road.
Built-in pockets on the rock face hold trailing vines, ferns and broad-leaved plants, with spiky accent plants along the crown. Along the boundary, we planted palms, flowering shrubs and ground cover in prepared beds, kerbed along the road and watered by a drip irrigation line.
The Fountain of Happiness sign is mounted on the rock face, with spotlights set into the base beds to light the water and lettering at night. Pipework and equipment are kept out of view but are easy to reach.
Outcome
Hardscape elements: The concrete and rock-sculpted waterfall wall, the herringbone-paved driveway to the gate, and concrete kerbs along the planting beds.
Softscape elements: Palms and flowering shrubs along the boundary wall, ground-cover and lantana-type flowering plants, trailing vines and ferns in the rock pockets, and accent plants along the top of the wall.
The finished feature has given Ocean View Ridge a true landmark. Visitors driving in see falling water, glowing lettering and layered rock before they even reach the gate. The warm rock tones sit well against the yellow gatehouse and white boundary walls, and the planting pockets add green to the whole face.
The landscaping along the road continues the welcome, with palms and flowering plants that grow in over time and line the approach with colour. The drip system keeps the planting healthy with little water.
A Feature Built for Brand and Place
For an estate, the entrance is part of the product. A well-built, well-lit water feature gives the development a distinct identity, supports the client’s message and gives residents a sense of pride every time they come home.
Noble Parks and Pools has once again shown that large water features and landscaping can be built to a high standard in demanding coastal conditions. With solid construction, natural-looking finishes and thoughtful planting, the Fountain of Happiness is built to welcome people for many years.
With its sculpted rock waterfall, lit welcome sign and palm-lined entrance, the Fountain of Happiness at Ocean View Ridge is a warm, memorable and lasting welcome to the estate.
