Contemporary Black-Tiled Linear Fountain Runda.

Three water jets with a raised black-tiled basin and a recirculating system.

About Project

Note: In respect of our client’s privacy, the homeowner’s name remains undisclosed.

A courtyard can look finished and still feel quiet in the wrong way. For this private residence in Runda, the client wanted a feature that would bring life and sound to the space. Noble Parks and Pools designed and built a contemporary linear fountain that does exactly that.

The fountain is a long, narrow basin raised above ground level and finished entirely in black textured tiles. Three jets rise in a line along its length, creating a steady rhythm of white water against the dark surface. A lower channel runs around the base, so the fountain appears to sit within a second layer of water. Set against a grey textured wall with soft lighting and young palms nearby, it gives the courtyard a clear focal point.

What the Client Envisioned

The client’s brief was simple and clear. They wanted a fountain that would:

  • Suit the modern, minimal style of the home.
  • Create the calming sound of running water in a private outdoor space.
  • Make a strong visual statement without needing a large area.
  • Run reliably day to day with little attention.
  • Stay neat, durable and easy to clean.
  • Work with the lighting and landscaping planned around it.

Challenges & Solutions

Building a fountain on a fresh construction site is more than assembling a basin and a pump. The structure has to be watertight, the plumbing has to be hidden and reliable, and the finish has to look sharp in every light. Our team worked from excavation through to commissioning to get every stage right.

The site presented its own conditions. The courtyard sits within newly built walls, on red Nairobi soil, with levels and landscaping still to be completed. The fountain had to be built accurately and sealed carefully so that it would perform well from the first day and keep doing so for years.

Challenges:

Delivering a clean, modern fountain on an active building site meant careful engineering behind a simple-looking finish. Below are some of the challenges we faced.

A fountain basin holds water around the clock. Any weakness in the concrete or joints would lead to leaks, water loss and damage to the surrounding ground and finishes.

The jets needed to sit in a straight, evenly spaced line, with supply pipes and fittings concealed inside the structure. Accurate positioning was needed before any concrete or tiling went in.

Three jets must rise to a consistent height and look balanced. Pressure and flow had to be set properly so no jet was weaker or stronger than the others.

Dark tiles show water marks, scale and dust more easily than light ones. The finish had to be durable, slip-conscious around the edges and easy to keep looking sharp.

Moving water splashes, and wind can carry spray onto the surrounding paving. The design needed to catch and contain water so the courtyard stays tidy and dry.

Open ground, loose soil and ongoing building work meant the fountain had to be built with care and protected so it would blend into the finished courtyard.

Solutions:

Each challenge was met with sound construction, precise setting-out and quality finishing materials, giving the client a fountain that looks simple and works reliably.

We cast a strong concrete basin with properly formed walls and a sealed interior. Waterproofing was applied before finishing, so the structure holds water reliably.

Supply lines and jet risers were set out and fixed in position before the basin was completed. This keeps the jets perfectly aligned and the plumbing out of sight.

Three stainless steel jets were fitted along the centreline and balanced for even height and spray. The result is a calm, repeating pattern that is pleasant to watch and listen to.

We clad the basin in black textured tiles, which give a rich, modern look and a slightly grippy surface. They stand up well to continuous water contact and are simple to clean.

A lower perimeter channel surrounds the raised basin to catch overflow and spray. It also adds depth and a layered look to the design.

The fountain was placed against a textured grey wall, with soil beds for planting and a low garden light close by. This links the water feature to the landscaping and lighting of the courtyard.

Outcome

The finished fountain has changed the character of the courtyard. What was once a plain corner now has a clear focal point, with the sound of water bringing calm to the space. The black tiles, steady jets and clean lines suit the modern architecture of the home.

The fountain is easy to run, recirculates its own water and fits neatly into a compact footprint. It shows that a water feature does not need to be large to make an impact.

A Focal Point That Works Day and Night

In daylight, the white jets stand out sharply against the dark basin. After dark, with garden lighting nearby, the water catches the light and adds atmosphere to evenings outdoors. The client now has a courtyard feature that welcomes guests and gives the family a quiet place to unwind.

Noble Parks and Pools has once again shown how thoughtful design and careful construction can turn a simple idea into a lasting feature. From the first excavation to the final tile, every step was handled with attention to detail.

With its crisp black finish, three rising jets and gentle sound of moving water, this Runda fountain is a stylish and peaceful addition to the home, built to be enjoyed for many years.
