About Project
Note: In respect of our client’s privacy, the homeowner’s name remains undisclosed.
The entrance is the first thing a guest sees and the last thing they remember. For this home in Lower Kabete, the client wanted the porch to feel more welcoming, with the calming sound and movement of water at the door. Noble Parks and Pools designed and built a stepped water wall that does this without taking over the space.
The feature is built as a three-level wall, with a tall central block flanked by two lower wings. Each level ends in a flat spillway that releases water in a smooth, glassy sheet. A thin LED strip along each lip lights the water from within, so the falls glow softly in the evening. The wall is clad in black stacked stone, which stands out against the warm, textured brown walls of the house and the dark timber door. Water collects in a stone-lined basin at the base, and large-leaved plants around the edges soften the transition to the paved forecourt.
What the Client Envisioned
A Welcoming Statement at the Door
The client wanted a water feature that would:
- Create a memorable first impression at the main entrance.
- Add the soothing sound of falling water to the porch.
- Suit the rustic stone character of the existing house.
- Fit into a limited entrance space beside the door and window.
- Look good both by day and in the evening.
- Run reliably with simple upkeep.
Challenges & Solutions
A water wall looks simple, but it depends on accurate levels and careful plumbing. Each spillway must be perfectly level so water leaves in an even sheet, and every pipe and cable must be hidden yet reachable for servicing. Our team planned and built each stage on site, from the trenching and plumbing to the stone cladding and final testing.
The setting added its own demands. The feature sits against the house itself, beside a window, a door and a downpipe, so water, electricity and masonry all meet in a small area. It had to look natural in its surroundings while being safe, watertight and easy to maintain.
Challenges:
Building a precise, lit water wall in a compact entrance meant solving structural, plumbing and safety problems in one small footprint. Below are some of the challenges we faced.
The wall had to fit between the door, window and walkway without blocking access or crowding the porch.
If a spillway is even slightly out of level, water runs to one side and the sheet breaks into streaks. Three separate lips had to be set precisely.
Each waterfall needs a balanced supply, so no level looks stronger or weaker than the others. The system also had to be easy to adjust.
The plumbing, pump and electrical cables needed to be hidden from view but accessible for servicing.
LED lighting and a pump sit right beside moving water, so every connection had to be properly protected and safe.
Water falling from height splashes and can damage nearby walls, plants and flooring if it is not contained.
Solutions:
Each challenge was met with careful setting-out, quality materials and neat detailing, giving the client a feature that is elegant, safe and simple to run.
We built the wall in three levels, tall in the centre and lower on the sides. This gives a strong, layered look while keeping the depth small enough for the entrance.
Each spillway was set with precise levelling before the stone was fixed. The result is smooth, even water sheets across the full width of each lip.
A manifold with a separate ball valve for each waterfall feeds the wall. This lets us fine-tune the flow to each level, and it makes later adjustment easy.
Supply pipes and cables run through a trench and a masonry chamber beside the feature, out of sight. The chamber gives technicians simple access without disturbing the finished wall.
A slim LED strip is fitted along each spillway lip to light the water from above. All cabling is routed and sealed to suit outdoor, wet conditions, with a weatherproof socket nearby.
The basin is built in concrete block, clad in black stacked stone and finished with a smooth concrete cap. It catches the falling water and keeps splash inside the feature. Large-leaved plants and potted greenery around the base soften the edges and absorb any stray spray.
Outcome
The finished water wall has changed the character of the entrance. Guests now arrive to the sight and sound of three smooth waterfalls cascading down dark stone, while the LED edges give the water a gentle glow after dark. The black stone contrasts well with the warm brown walls and red timber door, which makes the feature look planned from the beginning.
The system recirculates its own water, so running costs stay low, and the hidden access chamber means servicing is quick and tidy.
A Feature That Suits the Home
The wall uses natural-looking stone, simple geometry and plants that echo the garden nearby. It adds calm and a feeling of coolness to the porch without competing with the house. Even a compact entrance can have real presence when the design is careful and the materials are right.
Noble Parks and Pools has once again shown how thoughtful design and precise workmanship can turn an ordinary doorway into a welcoming focal point.
With its stacked black stone, three glowing sheet waterfalls and the quiet sound of moving water, the Lower Kabete entrance feature is a refined welcome home, built to be enjoyed for many years.
